Mama always told me that I should play nice but she didn't know you when she gave me that advice...

I can hardly believe I am watching you on him!
I bubbled with a bright smile. My brother smiled awkwardly back at me, patting his mount. Ian was the lovechild between Stride of Perfection and us. It was a long time coming that Roger got to not only ride but also own the horse that he poured his heart and soul into. Ian embodied everything we had hoped we would get from crossing Little Miss Innocent and Jet Ski. The stallion shone beautifully in the sunlight today, his ears forward. Ian had taken immediately to Roger and his riding style, although most horses did. I patted Kiss lightly and the mare flicked her ears back at me, bobbing her head slightly.
We better get going, these two look like they are raring to go.
I said sarcastically, raising my eyebrows at Ian's floppy lip. Roger grinned and picked up a light jog. I followed in suit and Kiss seemed to wake up a bit. The two horses seemed comfortable in each other's company and both were turf runners so it made things really easy. Plus, I really did love to ride with Roger. It had been a long time since we had ridden together and today was a beautiful sunny day. Ian walked gingerly into the loading gate and Kiss followed, a little more cautious. The mare snorted now and I realized that I may have one of Kiss' little tricks to work through soon. I sighed lightly and the automatic gates opened.
Ian broke quicker than Kiss because before I knew it, Kiss had stumbled slightly to the left. What a klutz, I thought. Kiss used this trip as an excuse to throw a quick trio of bucks and I groaned. I remained centered in my saddle, reining her back slightly. She shook her head and moved onward. Ian glided ahead of us and I say that because that's the only way his movement could be described. His muscles rippled underneath his bay coat and the look on Roger's face was absolutely thrilling. He looked ecstatic. I couldn't help but smile as I started to move up toward Ian's flank.
Kiss was in a steady groove now, not pushing the pace much but still moving along at a good click. Ian's ears flicked backwards, feeling the mare at his side and pushed forward a little without any indication from Roger. Kiss felt the movement and upped her speed slightly to match. The two were unbelievably smart but I would say that Kiss was smarter because girls are better than boys... Duh. As we moved into the backstretch, we had settled into a slightly quicker than average pace.
I positioned Kiss towards the inside now, Ian had taken the center of the track. The little bay mare's auds pricked as we rounded the final turn and she leapt into a faster gallop. I grinned in spite of myself. Kiss was so smart and I appreciated that, even though she liked to do a lot of silly things. I glanced over at Ian now and the stallion knew exactly what was going on.
As the final furlongs came, the two moved into overdrive. The stallion's stride seemed to be eating up the ground and the smaller filly seemed shocked. The two battled for the lead fiercely, one in the lead, then the other, then the other. It was incredible. Both were loving the competition. As we crossed the finish, Ian was ahead by a nose and Kiss snorted almost immediately. She was angry to have lost to that oaf. I laughed lightly as we pulled up the two horses.
Her ego is bruised. You did good girl, you were so close! I know being short is hard.
I patted the mare and she snorted again. Roger smiled and patted Ian. It was a good match race but surely not the last one between these two!
