Fern is the quieter, more agreeable counterpart of the two mares that we purchased from a Russian breeding farm in the summer of 2007. The other mare that we purchased was sold to Anael Estate in April 2008 but we just couldn't bear to part with this girl. Fern came to us a little underweight but we fixed that quickly with some groceries and TLC. Upon her arrival, Reed deduced that she was probably beaten into submission at some point in her earlier training. We don't quite know how old she was when she was first trained to saddle but she came to us with a good understanding of the aids and general ways of riding. Reed continued with her training and gradually improved her jumping style with kind words and his quiet seat. The result is Fern as she is now, a sweet mare with an excellent show record behind her name. Fern has a few trust issues with certain people, people that may remind her of someone back in Russia but other than that, she is a low-key mare and is easy to get along with. She especially enjoys sidesaddle and is a very correct jumper. She always cleans up in the hunter ring and is the perfect medal mount. The only thing that truly terrifies Fern is a whip. We have never ever used one on her but if she even catches sight of one, she trembles and tries to get away violently. She is very balanced under saddle and requires no help from her rider to keep her that way. She doesn't have issues with yanking on her mouth or bad riding, although it does irritate her when it is in excess. She's very responsive to seat and leg, also making her a prime dressage horse. She's also brave about jumping odd fences out doing cross country but will hike her forelegs up really high over it if it's too scary. Fern also is an exceptional broodmare. She never gets frustrated with her foals and makes the whole birthing and weaning process extremely easy. Her foals have turned out to be incredible and Fern is just an excellent mother all around. After a while of trying to sell Fern to a home that would truly have time for her, we decided to keep and retire her. She may have one more foal in her older age but otherwise, she will just spend the rest of her days as a companion for Brooke.
