The Breeder's Cup 2007
Toledo Surprise put in a great race and there were many complications in the race itself. He put himself out there and will be retiring. Congrats to him. Here is the Pre-Race Opinion of wildfire's father: 'Toledo Surprise - 9/2 Has run with better.' Here is the play-by-play of the race he was entered in: 'Before we give you the Sprint lineup, we interviewed Brandy of Cold Creek Inc. and got some insight into both of Cold Creek's horses that have and will run today.
BC: What do you think of Abstract Artist's run in the Filly & Mare Turf? Brandy: I really couldn't ask for anything more from Abbie today. She gave it her all and I would have loved her if she had won this race or not. She'll be retiring from racing permanently. I mean, she probably could have won more but why not end on top? She'll be retrained for jumping and eventing, hopefully falling in her sire's hoofprints. Her injury will be looked into and she'll have a long awaited break. In direct answer to your question, I am completely estatic! BC: What horses are you going to watch out for in the Sprint? Brandy: Of course, I'm impartial because of my ownership of Toledo Surprise. He's done well and just like Abstract Artist, this will end his career and will be retrained for western. Anyway, he's done well before this and I hope he'll come through. He really loves to run, I can tell you that... I've definitely heard of ISea Thunder * before and I think that Surprise has raced him before and won... Not quite sure. I've heard great things about Up Light Apache and I'm not sure what to expect... WB Thunderbird I've also heard of and also not sure what to expect. I'd have to say that Surprise's biggest competition would be War Flag.
And so, here are the Sprint odds.
WB Thunderbird is the favorite, and the undefeated Up Light Apache is the 9/2 second choice. This should be an interesting race, because it is one of the most closely matched in the entire racing day. You could make a case for every single one of these five horses, but only one will come out on top.
And now to the post parade.
ISea Thunder * is looking very good, he certainly stands out with his very arabian looks, and he's in good form. He's definitely not to be overlooked.
Up Light Apache is next, and he's very frisky. A little sweaty already, but not too bad-looking.
WB Thunderbird is third, and he's the favorite. He's won stakes racews before, and has the most starts and points in this race, which could give him a slight advantage.
Toledo Surprise is next, and his first start was in fact in last year's Breeder's Cup Juvenile, where he placed 5th. Nevertheless, since then he's done marvelously, and this will be his final start as a racer.
War Flag finishes up this field, and he's being pretty naughty. He's hard to handle and hot-headed, but his jockey has been changed and with any luck that'll help him.
They're at the post, and ISea Thunder * puts up a little struggle before loading, Up Light Apache goes in after a quick look, WB Thunderbird balks a few times but then loads. Toledo Surprise walks in as if it was his own stall, and War Flag make a huge ruckus before they push him into the gates. They're all loaded.
And they're off! A good break for all, and as they head off War Flag leads. Up Light Apache is a length behind him, and WB Thunderbird is right there too. One back to ISea Thunder * and Toledo Surprise trails. They head down the stretch in this sprinting race, and War Flag leads by one and a half. Up Light Apache isn't giving anything yet, and the others are biding their time as well. War Flag is pulling away steadily, leading by 3 now, and the first quarter was a quick 22 seconds. WB Thunderbird passed Up Light Apache, and the other colt lets him. ISea Thunder * moves up a little, getting to the outside and waiting to strike. Toledo Surprise is hanging on the rail. The half mile flashes by in 44 4/5 seconds, and this brisk pace is being set by War Flag, who leads them by 4. But now ISea Thunder * is given his head, as are WB Thunderbird, Up Light Apache, and Toledo Surprise. Those four all quickly eat into the lead that War Flag has. Up Light Apache is on the rail, with WB Thunderbird to his outside, and ISea Thunder * even farther out. Toledo Surprise runs on the rail just behind Up Light Apache, who drifts out to go around War Flag, who quickly turns his head and nips at Up Light Apache. The colt's rider checks him to keep him out of the way, forcing Toledo Surprise to slow and go around. And now ISea Thunder * and WB Thunderbird are fighting for the lead. A mere nose seperates them, and now Up Light Apache is trying again to move up. Toledo Surprise has nowhere to go, and War Flag is doing everything in his power to go after Up Light Apache. Luckily, though, he's tiring, and as they pass under the wire it's WB Thunderbird by a nose, ISea Thunder * coming second.
And after an interesting race, the order of finish appears to be WB Thunderbird, ISea Thunder *, Up Light Apache, War Flag, Toledo Surprise. But the stewards are looking over that because of violence on War Flag's part, even though there was no objection launced.
And they are going to modify the order of finish. War Flag was knocked to last, and here's the final order of finish:'
1st: WB Thunderbird 2nd: ISea Thunder * 3rd: Up Light Apache 4th: Toledo Suprise 5th: War Flag

The first MHS Racing Club race entered by the CCI team, we entered both of our golden boys, Jet and Surprise. At the beginning, Surprise was nowhere near the front and seeming to wait to strike. Obviously, we've taught him well over the season. He flew from out of the back, coming even with the leading and falling slightly behind to complete with a second! With this race and the Breeders Cup, Surprise ends his racing career.

Surprise has surprised us once again, partly in a good way and partially in a bad way. After pulling a second in his colts race, he came in dead last in the colts and fillies combinded race. More training is obviously in order. Here is a summary of his performance in the colts race, voiced by wildfire: 'Closed fast just before the wire, could have done it if race was just a little longer.'

Surprise surprised us as expected. Surprise was entered in this race at the very last minute after another horse was scratched. This was his maiden race and although he gave a little trouble loading, he did fairly well. He stayed not far off from the field itself and he finished in a close fifth. He was up against some of the best 2 year olds in the area and he did well considering his circumstances.
