Y12 The Wire Finish Cup Turf
Written by Ripley: "Ladies and Gentlemen we are about to introduce the race horse for the Wire Finish Cup Turf in the paddock. One race has already gone off already and we are excited to give you another champion making performance. It is 75 degrees today and the turf track is a little damp due to recent showers. But as the card runs today, the track will surely be drying out. What a perfect day!
The Wire Finish Cup Turf is run over nine furlongs, obviously over the turf. Only three horses decided to do battle in our race today, but they are very strong you could say. Infinite Warcry is currently the favorite for this race and also the prohibitive favorite for The Turf Triple Crown this year. He is even money based on his three wins so far this year including wins in the Coronation Cup and the Unicorn Horn Colts Turf. He looks on his toes today and had a very easy workout the other morning. It looks like Stride of Perfection Stables has really conditioned this colt for the race. The Jessie James colt could not look any better.
Gate two will hold the Akita Rose Stables' stallion Thunderstrike. The dark bay by Mr. Light, out of the mare Lyrick, has been running constantly over this race track, running six times this year. He won one race this year in the Hambo Stakes and though he has not had a recent works, the five year old looks well muscled and ready to roll just off of his recent races. He did finish third in the Unicorn Horn Turf so he hasn't been facing slouches.
Calmly circling about the paddock in saddle cloth three is the Innocent Skier. This stallion, by Jet Ski and out of Little Miss Innocent, has the bloodlines to do amazing things on the turf. He has bounced around a lot stable wise though he has done well in past years. This is his fourth start of the year and he also has a single win in Year Twelve. He looks calm and collected. We've seen him racing, but haven't seen him training since before the Unicorn Horn. He took second in the Unicorn Horn Turf.
And there's the call for rider's up! *
They've made their way out onto the turf track. All three colts look pretty calm and cool in front of the massive audience. The least experienced of the three is Infinite Warcry, but he's passing his tests with flying colours. They're warming their colts up now and they circle the track once before the starters signal for them to come to the gate. Everyone is as professional as can be and the cloud is holding their collected breaths. Infinite Warcry goes into gate one calmly, then Thunderstrike. Boy oh boy this is the easiest group to load. The Innocent Skier is in. All is still. *
AND THEY'RE OFF!
Thunderstrike bolts immediately to the front. The bay wants the lead and he's got it as The Innocent Skier and Infinite Warcry settle to track in second and third, respectively. It's an easy run to the first turn now and Thunderstrike is doing it all on his own with no movement at all from jockey Melanie Mackenzie. The five year old knows his job and does it willingly and well in control. The other two are about three lengths off of this bay colt, traveling just as nicely as can be. They are definitely not in any hurry. Adele Rogers and Amber Black are both still as statues. Not planning on making their moves until the homestretch. But they're letting Thunderstrike get away with murder on the lead. He just cake walked the first quarter in :25 seconds. He's moving nicely into the back stretch at this very moment, absolutely cruising. The Akita Rose Stable's mount is looking for another win to his resume.
The Innocent Skier and Infinite Warcry are asked to move a little forward, but their riders are trying to save their closing kicks for later in the race, for the long homestretch. Thunderstrike is moving along and clicks a quarter off in :49 seconds. He's picked up some speed and has now opened to a five length advantage. Mackenzie has yet to move on the brawny stallion. They travel along, their positions not changing. Still one, two, three around the track. But Thunderstrike is opening up on these leaders. He's now picking up a faster pace, not under any urging yet. He is about nine lengths in front at this point. If I were the jockeys on The Innocent Skier and Infinite Warcry I'd start getting worried. They aren't moving just yet. They're really hoping Thunderstrike will shut it down. But he hasn't yet and he isn't even being asked.
The bay cranks it into the far turn and The Innocent Skier has now made his move under urging from Adele Rogers. She's shaking her hands to wake him up and he is making up ground as Thunderstrike cuts the turn oh so nicely. My hearts pounding. Thunderstrike will steal the race and Infinite Warcry is just getting started! The favorite's not even close to the lead! He's following The Innocent Skier around the far turn, black and powerful in his striding. Oh my lord. Thunderstrike's six lengths in front, clicking off a 1:14. He's really flying now! It looks like he's going to win!
But oh my LORD! DOWN THE CENTER OF THE TRACK IT'S INFINITE WARCRY! BLACK IS GETTING AFTER HIM NOW! HE'S COMING WITH GIANT STRIDES! CLOSING THE GAP WITH EVERY SINGLE ONE! HE'S PASSED THE INNOCENT SKIER WHO HAS NO ANSWER FOR HIS TREMENDOUS BURST OF SPEED. A FURLONG TO GO!
THUNDERSTRIKE IS THREE LENGTHS IN FRONT, BUT INFINITE WARCRY IS GUNNING FOR HIM NOW! HE HAS HIM IN HIS SIGHTS! WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT TURN OF FOOT! THEY'RE SIDE BY SIDE! HERE'S THE WIRE!
INFINITE WARCRY BY A NOSE! WHAT A TREMENDOUS PERFORMANCE, FROM A TREMENDOUS ANIMAL. HE'S MADE IT FOUR IN A ROW IN YEAR TWELVE!
I have chills, my assistant has chills. The crowd roars as Infinite Warcry returns to the winner's circle. He's sweating and exhausted. But what a run! A fantastic, fantastic run.
Thunderstrike returns as well, tired and in need of rest. But he nearly stole it out from under Stride of Perfection Stables. He ran his heart out today, but that performance should boost his confidence. The Innocent Skier didn't appear to handle the damper track so well today and was beaten three and a half lengths. A horse race it was today!
