Preston was born in our first foal crop (2007) and is sired by a CCI personal favorite, Toledo Surprise. As a young colt, Preston and Surprise could easily have been the same horse and it was obvious that Preston was going to take after Daddy. We hoped he would get his sire's passionate love of racing and did our best to place Preston in a home where he would be a star. Unfortunately, it didn't work out as we had hoped so he returned here and we, on a whim, entered him in a few races. After a week or so, we realized that we were crazy and we needed this guy to boost our racing cred. We would never think of selling him now! Much to our delight, he had his father's love of running and is very willing to learn but still had that obnoxious colt attitude when being schooled. Preston prefers turf and severely lacks gusto on the dirt racetracks; something about the green of the turf really gets him revved up! He got off to a fantastic start as a racer, reaching the GI level before he turned three. As Preston has gotten older, we are proud to say that he has somewhat (the key word here!) grown out of his 'child with ADD' attitude. In the past, he was not able to focus all of his energy into racing but Roger helped our favorite palomino come up with strategies to keep him focused, although we sometimes find that he relapses! When he completely focuses on the task at hand, there is nothing that can stop him! He does really well running short to mid distance race because he focuses everything he has for only a short amount of time but once you try to race him past twelve furlongs or so, he really does grab the bit and run, killing any energy that you have managed to save. Off the track, he loves new things but at the same time, is terrified of them and spooks at everything. He gets scared by the absolute weirdest things (even if he's seen it before...?) and you have to be on your toes if you want to introduce him to something new. He's absolutely adorable though and a very curious stallion who usually wanders (or gallops around like an idiot). Often, he's brought into the barn at night with cuts and scrapes from his day of adventures! He can be pushy if not kept in check on the ground so it's best for only the most confident of handlers to work with him. He's flashy, conformationally correct and a rare color for a thoroughbred (once again, taking after Dad). His sire adjusted well to western and we figure that we will try something of that sort for Preston. We're thinking of trying him as either a trail horse (if he decides that everything isn't out to eat him!) or a jumper, depending on his energy level. His free spirited attitude helps him overcome the odds and do well in what he loves to do! We love Preston to pieces and he will most definitely end up being one of our primary racehorse studs in the future.
