As the dam of the only Connor foal and Abbie's mother, we probably expected a little more than her average win streak. Abbie had adjusted so well and overcompensated for our low expectations so we guessed that Brooke would do the same. She was bought in New York off a wealthy man's racing string and we were informed that she was 'worthless'. From looking at Brooke when she arrived (covered in scars and wounds), we were glad to have gotten her out of that situation and hoped that she would be able to deliver better results since she was not being beaten anymore. We slowly worked her back up to racing again and realized that Brooke is actually a decent racer if she puts herself up to it. With our support and kindness, Brooke actually went on to win a few races with us and we realized the only thing holding her back was her age (she was 11 at the time). She showed poor results after a while and seemed to lose interest during the span of the race. She lacked the power that some horses can whip out in a flash. We loved Brooke though and couldn't bear to part with her. At a race, the vet noticed that her knees had swelled dramatically after the post parade. Brooke has quite a bit of arthritis due to racing at such a young age. We permanently retired her after that day and kept her with us, not wanting her to return to a situation like she was in before. Our vet has confirmed that she is sound enough to have more foals and even show a little. She has been jumped a few times and loves it to death so we may put her in little hunter shows just for fun. She's quite frisky for her older age and will throw herself into a wall or buck if she feels up to it. We know that Brooke is an excellent producer and we are happy that we have found the right place for her on our farm. Brooke and Abbie spend most of their time together and Abbie seems content to have her mother with her.
